Narrative: Sleigh bells date back to the earliest times - archaeologists have found horse bells in England dating back to the time of the Roman Empire. Many people believed that such bells would attract wealth or other good fortune. Eventually, horse bells became a practical feature for wagons and sleighs travelling in the countryside. Their purpose was to warn pedestrians and other drivers. Some areas enacted laws making sleigh bells mandatory.
