Narrative: This ashtray was made using a lid from a mayonnaise bottle for the base and several bottle caps to form the rim and handle. Folk art using bottle caps was popular in the 1940s; hobby magazines published plans for creating bottle cap figurines in this period. The artist may have seen these designs and created his own ashtray or he may have been a hobbyist who enjoyed creating objects out of recycled, every day materials. Folk artists often are inspired by materials around them; they infuse their own culture and experiences into their designs to create unique pieces.
